This position is responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary facility for animals and people; providing humane handling and care for all shelter animals, and assuring that all animals’ nutrition, housing, and basic medical needs are met daily. This is an entry level position with a heavy focus on cleaning and care.
Position Duties
The following statements describe the essential functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive list of work requirements.
Responsible for all duties related to the care of shelter animals, including cleaning of holding/kennel/public viewing areas, providing and monitoring food and water, bathing, and grooming.
Must be able to work with all the animals in the shelter.
Provide emotional and tactile enrichment for shelter pets.
Ensure all non-behaviorally challenged dogs get kennel relief at least twice daily.
Observe and evaluate animals for signs of illness and report any symptoms to appropriate personnel.
Restock supplies as necessary.
Consistently maintain grounds – removing trash, debris, and animal waste.
Work directly with Animal Care Specialist-Level III, to stay informed on all behavior and medical plans for animals.
Communicate cleaning procedures and policies to public and volunteers as appropriate.
Report any unsafe conditions to management.
Report needed repairs and upkeep of facility.
Comply with all policies as described in the company Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
Comply with all policies as described in the company Employee Handbook.
Other duties as assigned, based on the needs of the company.
Position Schedule
40 hours per week. Work hours vary and include weekends. Additional hours, including holidays, may be required.
Position Requirements
High School Diploma/GED required.
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills required.
Ability to work with both cats and dogs.
Emotionally capable of dealing with euthanasia when necessary.
Create a culture of embracing volunteerism, emphasizing the importance of volunteers in all aspects of the organization.
Must adhere to HSSC Client Experience Guidelines that are set forth to remove bias and barriers and establish our organization as a resource to our community.
Ability to multitask.
Proficiency of English language for purposes of writing, reading, customer interactions, presentations, and employee direction.
Must have reliable transportation to/from work.
Ability to adhere to multiple policies of the company.
Ability and desire to promote the mission and goals of the company.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds
This position is labor-intensive; moderate to great physical exertion is required; including bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching above/below the waist, pushing/pulling movements, lifting, walking, sitting, and standing and in conditions involving temperature fluctuations.
Must work with cleaning solvents.
Must wear slip-resistant shoes.
Salary: $15 – $17/hr
